Recently...

This posting is for little other purpose than to keep the blog alive. It may be that 2 blogs is too much for me. However, I will likely never concede that opinion and just limp this one along. It also may be that I will revive this blog and send it to the top of the list of most visited blogs on the web. Until then...

If nothing else, I can provide a list of notable works of literature that I have enjoyed in the last few months.

TIME magazine - every week, or when I make time to catch up.

The Bible - reading through with the family for the second time. First time took us nearly 6 years at approx. 1 paragraph per night. Currently in the 31st chapter of Genesis.

A Heart for Freedom by Chai Ling - Reading this with Bec. Currently half way through the book. Quite an enlightening perspective on the oppression and modern history of China.

The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien - Reading this with the family. This has also taken over a year to read aloud to Ella and Bec. We nearly have the Hobbits home again. Middle Earth has been saved.

The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli - If I were anticipating the takeover of a medieval kingdom, I would be taking notes. Does Machiavelli get a bad rap? I wonder...

The Supreme Court by Jeffrey Rosen - Listening to this on audio book while I drive. Fascinating. Unfortunately I should be taking notes - difficult while driving.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey - I have so much to learn.

One Bullet Away by Nathaniel Fick - A Marine Recon officer's account of his experience with the Marines and his time in Afghanistan and Iraq. Interesting seeing the battle from such a limited perspective. He limits the reader's access to plans and intel - to mimic his own experience. No omnipotent point of view here. Also no role for Stallone or Schwarzenegger.

The Great Deluge by Douglas Brinkley - If I was to define objective - Brinkley's handling of hurricane Katrina would be included in the definition. Very poignant.

San Francisco is Burning by Dennis Smith - Not sure how I got on this track of reading about destroyed American cities. Waiting for the real thing...

Several others that either elude me or have not been worth my time.


***Failed Attempt:

Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky - I became so depressed reading this that I gave up shortly after the murder. Someone please tell me if there is light at the end of that dark Russian tunnel. If so, I may try again.

Little House on the Prairie




I looked around the corner of the living room at my daughter sitting in MY chair and realized that she was 3/4 of the way done with her first novel. 335 pages of Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie.
I had seen my 8 year old flipping the pages 2 days earlier, and asked her to read to me while I rested. Within minutes I was captivated and my short rest was extended. I got to hear about how Pa and Ma built their cabin out of logs pulled from the creek bottoms, and how Mr. Edwards had moved in right down the creek and was going to help Pa finish the cabin and barn.

I walked through the room at one point some hours later and she looked up with wide eyes and said, "The fire was like a wall all around their house!" and then said something about them saving baby Carrie before getting lost again to her new world. As if to allay my fears, a few moments later she reassured me that they had all been saved.

I learned in passing that the horses had been named Pet and Patty by the girls, that Indians had snuck into the cabin, and later that the Indians had returned to steal Pa's tobacco.

My mother claims, and I suppose I have some recollection, that she read this story to my sisters and myself when we were very young. So with what little I recall from at least 25 years ago, and the snatches of expression emitted from my recliner I've pieced together a few bits of the story.

To try for a more didactic approach, I quizzed her about her book a few days later:

So what did you like most about the book?
-I liked it best when they were traveling.
Why were they traveling?
-Because the Big Woods were getting too crowded and there wasn't enough game.
Who is your favorite character?
-Jack.
The dog?
-Yeah cause he's a dog.
Which character did you learn the most from?
-Laura and Mary.
What did you learn?
-I don't remember...
Did anybody change in the book?
-I don't remember - but Laura or Mary had a birthday.
-Laura and Mary learned something about the Indians.
What did they learn?
-They learned that they had built their house in the Indian's territory.
Were the Indians mean to them?
-No - but they would steal stuff from them sometimes. And they had skunk skins on them sometimes. They were stinky!
What did they use the skunk skins for?
-They were hats or to cover their bodies. Because they're bare - you know. At least mostly bare. -The children were all bare!
Indeed.
What did they eat?
-Meat, cornbread, and they drank water. And milk.
How did they get the milk - did they have a cow?
-Yep, and it had a calf. Actually it was bull.
The calf?
-No the cow.
So how did they get milk from a bull?
-It must have been a girl bull.
Huh?
-Well it had horns.

And then I remembered why reading is so important. I really don't think I knew - at 8 years old - that cows could have horns.

Horns, Udders.
Sit, Stand.
Red, Green.
Either, Or.

In the time I've gotten around to publishing this, she has now also archived the next book in the series. The library book bag is hanging by the front door, and I suspect Laura will grow older and have more adventures over the next week.

Uncle Tom's Cabin

Incapable of putting my thoughts into words, I have mused on Harriet Beecher Stowe's poignant masterpiece for several weeks. What can be added to her expose' of such a grim era?

Lincoln is quoted as having commented upon meeting Stowe, "So this is the little lady who started this great war."

If it is possible that you are completely unfamiliar with Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe, then in short the novel is a tale of the antebellum south, slavery, pride, and pain. An ever omniscient point of view puts the reader into the mind and motive of the slaves, the free, children, aged, poor, and wealthy all playing a part in the quagmire of an economy and way of life dependent on the subjugation of mankind by his neighbor.

From the perspective of a contemporary, Stowe draws the reader into her novel with piercing pleas for sympathy. The story is frequently punctuated by addresses to the audience such as her depiction of Tom on the night of finding he is to be sold away from his wife and boys:

"He leaned over the back of the chair, and covered his face with his large hands. Sobs, heavy, hoarse, and loud, shook the chair, and great tears fell through his fingers on the floor: just such tears, sister, as you dropped into the coffin where lay your first-born son; such tears, woman, as you shed when you heard the cries of your dying babe. For, Sir, he was a man, ---and you are but another man. And, woman, though dressed in silk and jewels, you are but a woman, and, in life's great straits and mighty griefs, ye feel but one sorrow!"

The agenda of this book needs no epilogue for clarification. Though driven heavily by emotional appeal, the force and purpose of the book are nonetheless consistent and, in a word, Christian.

The characters are realistically drawn on the canvas of imagination. Both static and dynamic characters brush through the pages providing flesh for the stereotypes. The static, prototypical, cruel master found in the character of Simon Legree lives up to the debased standard of wretchedness, and indeed fails to find grace in the eyes of the author. Only a moment's flicker of conscience is allowed for such a brute who is ultimately punished greater than all of Stowe's creations, being damned to the fires of hell, skids greased by his mind numbing alcoholism.
The death of Tom's previous master Augustine St. Clare is a different tale altogether. St. Clare who had lived a similarly godless existence, but with a morality the polar opposite of Legree, is permitted to reach out for grace on his death bed, and the prayers of Tom lead St. Clare on a final journey of peace.

A novel obviously says as much about the author as it does about the subject matter. Indeed, this particular book does also, so much so that one could imagine feeling at ease chatting and discussing the characters with the lady who conceived them.

For me, the most impressive characters lie in Eva, and her father St. Clare. As a father of 2 daughters, the young Eva (Evangeline) embodies the 2 blonde haired gifts of conscience I know all too well. How her innocence struck at the heart of the issues at hand and proved a catalyst for hope in the lives of her negro friends. And I shed tears over her part of this tale.
I certainly sympathized most with the kindly yet austere Augustine St. Clare. I envisioned myself in his plight, and struggled to see how I might have lived any differently. His perspective on life and candid nature were kindred to my own. Of all the lines in the book, the one I remember is that spoken by him to his somewhat self-righteous cousin from the North. When pressed to give his honest impression of the slavery dilemma, he retorted:
"I am one of the sort that lives by throwing stones at other people's
glass houses, but I never mean to put up one for them to stone."
I'm afraid my cynicism found a kindred spirit in Augustine St. Clare.

This is a classic literary work that though highly criticized at its inception, will have my voice join the choir of its proponents. There are only a few books which I feel should be required reading for any young person. This is one of them.

It could be tempting to imagine that the raw power of this work was spent on an era that was healed long ago. Shame on us for thinking that its didacticism is now impotent since the Emancipation Proclamation and 13th amendment. The abolition of southern slaves hardly brought about a universal abolition of the slave trade. It is said that today more humans are enslaved than at any other time in history.

The themes of justice, love, honor, purity, honesty, and a pure and undefiled religion are timeless. And, only a fool would say that bigotry, subjugation, and cruelty have been eradicated from humanity. On the contrary, the battle for morality is harder fought and the battle lines no less clear for us in this century than they were for those in the past.

PRA vs. UNCRC Part 3 - So Let's Talk About It

By now you should have read Part 1 & 2 of this discussion...

To be very clear - We are completely in favor of protecting children. Absolutely. However, based on statements from socially left-leaning policy makers, the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child Treaty is obviously being staged as a battering ram to be used against the "traditional" family, ultimately harming the very children they want to protect!

So, if the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) Treaty is indicative of a problem, then what is our proposed solution?

Good question.

Ingeniously, some of the foremost thinkers in "Christian" legal circles have proposed a constitutional amendment to secure the rights of fit parents. The PRA or Parental Rights Amendment has been drafted with the intent of heading off the what many see as a critically dangerous trend toward state control over the functions of the family. You must visit their site or an array of others and study the arguments yourself, as that is not the point of this posting. However, I've quoted the following from their site...

The only kind of law that can override a treaty is the Constitution of the United States. State laws or state constitutions cannot override treaties. There is no guarantee that federal statutes could override treaties—moreover, we enter a binding legal promise to obey a treaty when we ratify it. America should not promise to obey a treaty and then claim it is appropriate to obey the treaty only when we want to. America of all nations must respect the rule of law.

There is only one possible solution for the eroding support for parental rights in the Supreme Court that can also stop the encroachment of international law.

We need to place the time-honored test of parental rights, as recognized by the Supreme Court for over seventy years, into the explicit text of the Constitution.

We cannot wait until our rights are formally demolished. We must act now to stop international law and protect these two key principles:

· Fit parents should be allowed to direct the upbringing of their children.

· American legislators, not international tribunals, should make the public policy for America on families and children.



In a nutshell that is the point of the amendment. But there is a problem. Who knows, or worse yet, who cares? I haven't seen any related banners, billboards, or television commercials. Who is getting out the word, and is the communication effective?

I recently attended a seminar co-sponsored by associates of the Parental Rights crowd, where the precious and spirited Beverly LaHaye spoke. Among the topics she broached was the downward spiral of our society. (Granted, this is nothing new.) She claimed that the largely uncontested and underestimated battles against prayer in school, and for homosexual marriage were the elephants in the room 20-30 years ago. No one cared to address them; those that did obviously failed to light up the night; thus, here are those pachyderms stampeding our children today. She made the clear point that we have another elephant in the room.

I agree with her that we need to step up and recognize the tusks, ears, and huge piles covered with flies for what they are. Unfortunately that same seminar, which spent much time on this very issue, sent me away with an ironic dilemma:

How do we communicate our concerns to our friends and neighbors? I'm a Christian and have many Christian friends who will understand my Biblical reasons for opposing the UNCRC. However, there are simple common sense reasons for more than just my Christian friends to become active in this fight. A united effort is essential for the PRA to pass.

In this series of posts, that question has been the foundation for my writing. How do we communicate this need? I respect the ParentalRights.org crowd deeply, but at this point they preach to the choir. In order to get a Parental Rights Amendment signed, we need to move out of the pulpit and into the public. What is preached to the choir will be disregarded by those less inclined to sing. I believe that our manner and tone must be different when communicating outside traditional Christian circles. And, though fear and sensationalism are fine for the media, we frankly weary of the emotion, and that certainly isn't the tack we want to take.

For example, do we think that the authors of the CRC had the undermining of the US justice system, the US family, and the Christian faith in mind when composing that document? Possibly, but not likely just like that, or at least not in that order. So why would we attack the treaty as if that was the intent of the treaty? I don't think we should.

Here are some words / concepts that I think may help us reach a broader audience with regard to the UNCRC...

Expensive.
Misguided.
Tedious.
Irrelevant.
Superfluous.
Waste - in regard to our legislators' time.
Excessive burden on already over-burdened social workers.

Likewise, here are some words / concepts that may help our audience understand the importance of the PRA...

Timing.
Morality.
Judicial indiscretion.
Family autonomy.

Diplomacy is not just for diplomats. These views must be communicated and not just preached. Preaching is what is emitted from bumper stickers, while communication must involve your time.

But then, what good is knowing what to say if we choose not to speak? On May 3rd I attended a Holocaust Memorial Service at Temple Sinai in Oakland, CA and was reminded by one of the speakers of the famous Edmund Burke quote - "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." Interestingly, the actual origin of that quote has not been discovered, though some suspect that it rises from Burke's Thoughts on the Cause of the Present Discontents, "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

Either way it is speaks to us today. It speaks to this issue.

PRA vs. UNCRC Part 2 - So What?

In the 1970's the EPA began the crackdown on lead (Pb) in consumer products. Those of us born since then should be thankful for the scientific research that discovered the deleterious effects of this heavy metal. What no one could have predicted however, was the expansive effects of this phase out.
To name a few:
  • Our modern paint doesn't coat as well and definitely doesn't last as long. Those bright reds and oranges popular in our grandparent's homes were suddenly toxic, and it took many coats of fresh paint to banish them. Now professional renovators must be licensed to even scrape it away.
  • Banning lead shot for use in hunting water fowl drove up the cost of birdshot and presented additional challenges to gun barrel and shot shell manufacturers.
  • And certainly among the most far reaching effects of the lead ban was in regard to automobile fuels;
In 1975 The EPA began the phase out of lead in motor fuels. In doing so a sleeping giant was re-awakened and ethanol raged in to fill a void. Not a stranger to motor fuels, ethanol began a comeback after resting in anonymity since the end of WWII. Over the course of the last half decade, all sides of the economic, political, and ecological debate have taken turns in befriending and belittling this lumbering behemoth. What is it with alcohol and the government anyway? Just as Prohibition fueled a black market and the Mob, so the legislated subsidies and formulations of ethanol reached far further into the economy than most would have supposed. Corn production (the major source of ethanol) and corn prices have been fomented into a maelstrom. Likewise, motor fuel production, distribution, and of course pricing, have taken on a life of their own - inextricably tied to corn - because of legislation about lead.

So what does this have to do with the PRA : CRC debate? Nothing directly other than this: Government involvement seems to always result in a remote - yet poignant - list of unintended consequences, and there's room to suppose that the list is not so remote or so unintended.

Don't get me wrong; I don't want my children to breathe lead fumes or nibble the lead paint off their toy blocks. However, what a government body does today will not only affect the specifically stated target, but will inevitably spread like the shot from from a 16-gauge shotgun and land in unexpected places. What concerns me more is that just as the trajectory and spread of a shotgun blast is carefully analyzed and formulated, even so the trajectory and spread of recent government action in the promotion of the UNCRC Treaty has been analyzed and formulated far more liberally than many will admit.

My purpose here is not to argue in minutia the dangers of the UNCRC Treaty. Others have done that more clearly than I could ever hope to. My simple purpose in this post is to encourage you to care about this issue.

As I stated in the last posting, I believe the UNCRC Treaty could be beneficial to some. I would even like to believe that the authors were purely altruistic in their motives and ambitions. What I can't be sure of however, is the impetus of the liberal lawmaking and judicial elements of our country and their intended use or abuse of this loaded shotgun.

The issue at stake is not the corruption and liberality of the UN and the CRC promoters - though in the main, that may be established many times over. Nor is the issue the legal ramifications of accepting a treaty. Both of those are merely fodder that feeds the beast. It seems to me that the beast to be contended with is actually an open door. In ratification of this treaty, we undeniably open a door for further state sanction and regulation endangering the sanctity of the family unit.

Are we simply talking about the law of unintended consequences? Assuming that we can predict the unintended consequence is defiant of the idiom's very definition; thus obviously we are not fearful of the unexpected, but rather anticipating an intentional direct action. If that sounds ominous then I'm getting my point across.

It is here that I recommend you to do some serious study of this specific issue. I can only stand here and wave a flag. And for that matter, the nature of blogs is that the only ones who typically see the flag waving are those who intended to come. Take some time to read the websites linked below. Formulate your own opinions. Then direct your friends and family to do the same. Are we willing to take the chance that liberal legislators, and judges will overlook a goldmine of indiscretion? I am not, for they already have not.

PRA vs. UNCRC - More Important Than You Might Think

Over the next few weeks and months, I want to go on a fact finding mission regarding the debate between those in support of and those in opposition to the UNCRC (United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child). For this time, I will attempt to remain neutral, though I suspect my opinion has already been formed and will be seen to seep in around the edges.

I've been listening to and reading arguments from both sides and each presents a plausible set of arguments against the other. For any uninterested person reading but one side of the argument, sway toward that opinion would be relatively simple. UNICEF's web pages for this particular convention are splendid and articulate. Likewise, the Parental Rights web site is overtly ominous in their portrayal of the treaty's impact on our families.

What is one supposed to believe - no less do? Well, we could continue with current protocol and do nothing but talk. However, it seems that recently talk is escalating and trending toward action.

So basically what is the UNCRC Treaty?

The UNCRC is an international treaty created and brokered by the United Nations. This treaty is not with the United Nations, as the UN is not a sovereign state. However, the broad reaching ideals and agendas of the UN saturate this document. (What is good, evil, and otherwise intrinsic in the UN are fodder for another debate.) Specifically here, we will concern ourselves with a specific product - the collective thought and action taken together to form a treaty whereby sovereign states will purport to agree on the definition and application of the rights of children citizens.
As stated on the UNICEF web site: "This compilation and clarification of children’s human rights sets out the necessary environment and means to enable every human being to develop to their full potential."

Honestly, this sounds great.

For some countries, acceptance of this treaty is a HUGE step forward. How can it be seen otherwise? For any country to move toward the idyllic as specified in this treaty from abusive child labor, slavery, and utter perversion would be a spectacular reward for the labor that went into the creation of such a document. The atrocities present and unspeakable in so many dark corners of the world must be confronted systemically. Without doubt the acceptance of the CRC in the parliaments of those dark corners can only bode well for the victims in the shadows.

One must admit though, that for some countries this is simply a feather in their cap with no meaningful action taking place. The stories are easily found where countries, in spite of ratification, have taken action in direct contradiction to the treaty. Shame on them - on many levels. Yet that failure does not prove inefficacy, shortsightedness, or inherent corruption within the CRC. What is proven, however, is the corrupt nature of humankind. This alone is the problem.

For some countries the CRC is, frankly, unnecessary and superfluous. Should those countries then balk at signing this treaty simply because it is superfluous? Well, obviously, all but two have not resisted. Somalia simply lacks a stable enough government to ratify the treaty, which means that for all practical purposes, the United States stands alone in the failure to ratify. It even seems to make sense for those countries that have established a moral upper hand in such issues to promote and encourage ratification in countries less morally inclined. Yet here sits the greatest nation in history pivoting on a decision that teeters on basically this point:

Is this treaty morally dangerous, absolutely essential, or simply an unnecessary waste of time and resources?

I can't say that I reject the treaty out of hand, nor can I say that I trust carte blanc anything that emerges from the halls of the United Nations. What most interests me is the swell of opposition that has forced the attentive to take note. Our purpose here is to help add to the ranks of the attentive.

As we discuss this further, it will become clear why it is so important for American families to care about the ramifications of this long simmering debate. What has been simmering since November 20, 1989 may be coming to a boil in this session of congress.

Dumas - The Three Musketeers


Hang on as Alexandre Dumas pins the reader to the coat tails of 4 diverse swashbucklers and assails the evils present in 17th century France. The Three Musketeers proved to be fascinating, exciting, insightful, and strikingly colorful.

I found record of no less than 3 notable translations of this book from the original French, and was not able to clearly track exactly which translation I had. It is sufficient then that it was translated. I can recognize approx. 5 words in French and those include at least 3 city names with cycling events starting or ending therein. In spite of my language deficiency, I at no point found the story ambiguous or strange, as one might expect in a translation from the amouric French to the spectacularly practical English. Much of the French language was present in the text - similar to the remnants of French and Russian remaining in the translated text of War and Peace. Whether the select phrases were common to the English ear at the time of translation, or whether a suitable translated equivalent fails to carry the weight of the authors intention, I don't know. No matter, it succeeds in drawing the English reader deeper into a fantastic realm where no cultural equivalent exists today and supplanting any attempt to drop an anchor into the shallows of reality.

This story is both well known and greatly distorted. I watched a movie some years ago which presented the story of d'Artagnan, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis. At no point in the movie did it occur to me that the story was really about the young man d'Artagnan and his entrance into manhood, the Musketeers, and the royal court of France. True to the name of the book, the movie held the 3 original Musketeers up as the focus, while distorting the true intent of the story as drafted by Dumas. I'll just get it over with and say "The book was better than the movie." There I said it.

I have no intention of writing a book report on this classic novel, and will thus spare you from another time worn phrase, "You'll have to read the rest of the book to find out what happens." In fact, you're going to have to read the whole book to find out what happens, because I don't have time or patience to summarize this dynamic and engaging plot.

Curious to me are the political and moral purposes of Dumas' novel which are at best dubious, as ends found in each of those arenas are found to be justified by diverse and contrary means. That is to say, he portrays an element as good in one light while later changing the light and finding fault in the same or vice versa. What's good for the protagonist, we might find to be shameful for the antagonist. Or, evil is spontaneously pardoned and declared good.

For instance, infidelity is commonplace in this novel and thus viewed with cultural acceptance and little reproach. The mistresses of each Musketeer and their daring friend are valuable to the success of the plot and adventures of the 4. However, on the dark side, one of the greatest evils of Milady De Winter is her chain seduction of those unfortunate gentlemen seen by her as obstacles or opportunities. On one hand the distortion of marriage is justified by the needs of the protagonists and the shortcomings of the mistress's real husbands, while on the other hand Milady is despised and ultimately punished for her seductions which leave no less distortion to the function of the sacred institution.

Similarly, politically one is left baffled by the author's handling of Cardinal Richelieu. Throughout the saga we are led to hold the Cardinalists, Catholics, and certainly the Cardinal himself in less esteem than the King and the poor Protestants held in the siege of La Rochelle. Though English, we are likewise enticed to hold the Lord Buckingham in high regard though he finds a mistress in the very Queen of France to the chagrin of Louis XIII and the fury of Richelieu. Though never fully exposed, this intrigue plays a central role in the plot. How is it then that Lord Buckingham is assassinated, the king is made a fool, and the Cardinal survives to not only pardon d'Artagnan, but elevate him among the Musketeers? Granted, it is not in Dumas' power to rewrite history. The Cardinal lives on, and Lord Buckingham was indeed stabbed to death by the very man named in the novel. Yet the abrupt transformation within the final chapters, must at least be regarded with curiosity.

I must leave it to the historians to establish why Dumas may have shed the particular shade and angle of light on this period of time which he did. Yet it was thought provoking to be led as spectator, mute and impotent, through the frontiers of France looking behind every rock and bush for one of the Cardinal's men, and then in a precocious instant to be allied with the man himself within the book's final chapter.

For the mature and discerning reader I recommend the book. Though by no means a history book, the novel gives a window from the 21st century out onto an exciting historical landscape from the perspective of one far less removed from the events than we ourselves.

"The Grisham"


My literary diet has taken a junk food twist. After several months of exhausting classical literature, I was ready for a snack - a modern novel.

It is always with some trepidation that I embark upon a novel. I have rather high standards when it comes to the arts and entertainment, so the marriage of the 2 in fiction novels provides a marked potential for disappointment. I've left a scattering of unfinished novels in my wake over the last few years. Gratuitous anything, typically qualifies a book for a quick return trip to the library.

In the same way I coaxed the family out for a long walk on a cold and rainy Thursday evening, by promising I would "treat" them to a snack while we were out, so I was coaxed through to the end of some rather weighty tomes by the promise of some refreshment I had borrowed from the Walnut Creek Library.

The high calorie, high carbohydrate, high sodium sidetrack I just finished was one of John Grisham's books in his "The _______" series. Or maybe all of his novels start with "The"? I won't disclose the actual book, since I don't necessarily recommend it. Yes, I just said that I don't recommend a book that I just finished and enjoyed. Think about that one and come back when you're ready.

Similarly, I frankly don't recommend any of his novels to be digested as pure and mindless entertainment. One should always read with eyes wide open and pen in hand, if necessary. Even those authors I respect most, I find fault with upon occasion. Those I respect most are lauded to fellow readers, while those with works less compatible with my world view are held closer to vest. If it requires much sifting and skipping, then I will likely let you find it on your own lest you hold me responsible for your inability to sift and skip.

Grisham, though brilliant in his own genre, is by no means the same caliber writer as John Bunyan, John Milton, or Leo Tolstoy, and maintains a paradigm wherein the morals, ethics, and basic principles whereby his character's lives are lived often differ diametrically from that of those who are intentionally writing from a Biblical world view.
That is not to say that Grisham is a foreigner to Christianity, as is evident from his portrayal of all variations of practice and pretext that fall under that label. It could even be said that he possibly bears a deeper understanding as an informed outsider than do many of those I interact with inside what is considered Fundamental Christianity. However, that doesn't mean that he communicates his plots, creates his characters, or controls the outcomes of his real to life situations with the objective of glorifying his Creator. We forgo that expectation when consuming secular works, leaving such high standards for the judgment of works created by those claiming the privileges of a Christian faith. And rightly so.

This particular story had a rapidly moving plot, colorful characters, and a perspective on morality that was compatible with my own. Not all of his novels meet these criteria. It was for those misgivings that I tentatively opened the cover, but I was soon drawn in, and thus found myself anxiously anticipating the ending.

As is typical of Grisham, the ending was not as expected. Though disappointed, I recognized the didacticism that saturated the plot and was contentedly relieved to disassociate with fictitious characters and their contrived dilemmas. In his "Afterward", he artfully exposed his agenda for the unobservant without offending the astute.

In short, Grisham is a skillful secular author with insight and creativity that can be enjoyed and appreciated by a reader armed with an adequate store of good judgment.

Pilgrim's Progress Part 2


Well, I spoke pretty highly of John Bunyan's account of Christian's travels along the narrow path toward the Celestial City. And right rightly so.

I then started what I hadn't expected - Part 2. It sure seemed like Christian's story was wrapping up quickly in comparison to what remained of the book. The Celestial City is the end right?

How is it that I have lived in literary ignorance of the second journey recorded by Bunyan? Christians' wife Christiana, after having abandoned her husband to remain in the city of Destruction, finds conviction and a conscience upon learning of the exploits and end of her estranged.

A second recorded journey ensues where Christiana and her 4 sons in repentance and anticipation likewise endure hardship on the long narrow path toward the bright city where her husband awaits.

I don't know if a stroke of regret brought Bunyan back to this story, or if possibly his readers demanded resolution for Christian's widow, or if part 2 was integral to his initial plot. Whatever the case, the plot in part 2 develops far more slowly as the former adventures of her now beloved are expanded upon at each turn, adding to the dialogue and enhancing the didacticism intrinsic to the previous narrative. The roving allegory of Christiana, her companion Mercy, and the 4 young men is thus layered atop that of the now epic journey of her husband.

In a word, Part 2 can become tedious. I don't say that in a completely negative sense, though at times I'm hesitant to return to the reading during long passages of reminiscence by some former acquaintance of the pilgrims of Part 1. Fortunately, the pilgrims of Part 2, the crowd of whom grows rather large by the end of the story, navigate their own adventures, thus making the steady though languid flow bearable in all but my most overstimulated moments.

The didactic asides and perpetual allegory are the marks of the progress of these pilgrims. Bunyan allows no blade of grass, ray of sunshine, pit, or stone to go unscrutinized for its pedantic potential. With that understanding and a willingness to ride the swells of this literary tide, the story can be appreciated much the way a sermon is appreciated - not exclusively for the vessel of plot, but rather for the power that drives the vessel forward.

I was moved to introspection many times, and would set the reading aside to muse on a principle expanded as I had never seen before. Both Part 1 and Part 2 could, I believe, stand alone. However, I recommend the whole as a discipline for any believer. I was improved by Bunyan's labors, and as stated in his closing poetic arguments, such was the purpose of his labors.

"...This book is writ in such a dialect

As may the minds of listless men affect:

It seems a novelty, and yet contains

Nothing but sound and honest gospel strains.


Would’st thou divert thyself from melancholy?

Would’st thou be pleasant, yet be far from folly?

Would’st thou read riddles, and their explanation?

Or else be drowned in thy contemplation?

Dost thou love picking meat? Or would’st thou see

A man i’ the clouds, and hear him speak to thee?

Would’st thou be in a dream, and yet not sleep?

Or would’st thou in a moment laugh and weep?

Would’st thou lose thyself and catch no harm,

And find thyself again without a charm?

Would’st read thyself, and read thou know’st not what,

And yet know whether thou art blest or not,

By reading the same lines? O then come hither,

And lay my book, thy head, and heart together."

Revisiting a Classic



Bec and I were reading a piece of literature, which I will comment on at a later time, wherein was listed a handful of books recommended as mandatory reading for children. Among those books was the long neglected Pilgrim's Progress. The compilation had "allowed" for a condensed version though I decided that if I was going to attack it, it would have to be in its original form as written in the 17th century.

I had felt for a long time that I was above this piece of literature, encouraged by my recollections of watered down adaptations for children. The link between the story and reality appeared far too tenuous even for my young mind. Those picture books had caught the drift, but, I believe completely missed the point. What had been lacking in the full color caricatures parsed out for children was the depth of the dialogue and brilliant use of the English language found in the original work. The Pilgrim's Progress was, so far as I can tell, never intended to be a child's story. In relegating it as thus the efficacy of this classic has been marred.

An unabashed allegory of the Christian life, this work is easily mishandled by well meaning tutors seeking a convenient cudgel wherewith to temper young minds.

John Bunyan intuitively warns at the end of Christian's pilgrimage in the conclusion to Part 1...

Now, reader, I have told my dream to thee,

See if thou canst interpret it to me,

Or to thyself, or neighbor: but take heed

Of misinterpreting; for that, instead

Of doing good, will but thyself abuse:

By misinterpreting, evil ensues.

Take heed, also, that thou be not extreme

In playing with the outside of my dream;

Nor let my figure or similitude

Put thee into a laughter, or a feud.

Leave this for boys and fools; but as for thee,

Do thou the substance of my matter see.

Put by the curtains, look within my veil,

Turn up my metaphors, and do not fail.

There, if thou seekest them, such things thou’lt find

As will be helpful to an honest mind.

What of my dross thou findest there, be bold

To throw away, but yet preserve the gold.

What if my gold be wrapped up in ore?

None throw away the apple for the core:

But if thou shalt cast all away as vain,

I know not but ‘t will make me dream again.


Bunyan no doubt suspected the misuse of his allegorical work and sought to preclude the very damage that was done to my understanding of the complex personifications of virtue and vice in his characters. Bunyan was no slack. He suffered under the Anglican church, even to imprisonment, for his resolve to handle the Word of Truth in a manner consistent with it's very teachings. What he created in the The Pilgrim's Progress is a timeless piece of literature that gives a face, a gait, and a demeanor to concepts, attitudes, and characteristics in such a way that forces the reader to reconsider the effects of those elements in his own life.

I for one, thought long and hard about the conversation that Christian had with Faithful in an aside regrading one Talkative as they traveled. Talkative's speech was seemingly noble and certainly heavenly, leading Faithful to assume good character in his companion. However, Christian knew of Talkative and held him in less high esteem and explained his rational to Faithful...

Christian: ...This man is for any company, and for any talk; as he talketh now with you, so will he talk when he is on the ale-bench; and the more drink he hath in his crown, the more of these things he hath in his mouth. Religion hath no place in his heart, or house, or conversation; all he hath lieth in his tongue, and his religion is to make a noise therewith.

Faithful: Say you so? Then am I in this man greatly deceived.

Christian: Deceived! you may be sure of it. Remember the proverb, “They say, and do not;” but the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power. Matt. 23:3; 1 Cor. 4:20. He talketh of prayer, of repentance, of faith, and of the new birth; but he knows but only to talk of them. I have been in his family, and have observed him both at home and abroad; and I know what I say of him is the truth. His house is as empty of religion as the white of an egg is of savor. There is there neither prayer, nor sign of repentance for sin; yea, the brute, in his kind, serves God far better than he. He is the very stain, reproach, and shame of religion to all that know him, Rom. 2:24,25; it can hardly have a good word in all that end of the town where he dwells, through him. Thus say the common people that know him, “A saint abroad, and a devil at home.” His poor family finds it so; he is such a churl, such a railer at, and so unreasonable with his servants, that they neither know how to do for or speak to him. Men that have any dealings with him say, It is better to deal with a Turk than with him, for fairer dealings they shall have at their hands. This Talkative (if it be possible) will go beyond them, defraud, beguile, and overreach them. Besides, he brings up his sons to follow his steps; and if he finds in any of them a foolish timorousness, (for so he calls the first appearance of a tender conscience,) he calls them fools and blockheads, and by no means will employ them in much, or speak to their commendation before others. For my part, I am of opinion that he has, by his wicked life, caused many to stumble and fall; and will be, if God prevents not, the ruin of many more.

In following the extended narrative excerpted above, I was forced to consider my own speech and that of others around me. As was no doubt intended, I was able to easily apply this allegorical figure with vibrancy to my relationships.

Bunyan could have easily chosen common names such as "William" or "John" or "Michael" and then allowed the reader to interpret from their actions the typology intended. Instead a far more direct approach was taken, leaving no doubt about the disposition of the new character. What this adds or detracts from the narrative is closed for debate. What remains is a great read and an opportunity for sincere introspection.

I enter into Part 2 of his book with a far greater appreciation and a far different expectation.

Coming to the End of - War and Peace

Do you think, If I were to grow a beard like his I could compose such outstanding literature? It may be worth a try.

Alas, like Sampson, I suppose the potency of the works is not at all attributable to the characteristics of the shell, but rather are the manifestation of a far deeper source.

After reading nearly 360 chapters of Tolstoy's War and Peace, I am pressed by the notion that I am little worthy to be commenting on such an amazing work of literature. I don't use the word "amazing" lightly. I am spellbound as I totter along the path of logical thought laid out by this brilliant author. In the epilogues to the book, which are no less a part of the whole than are the Bill of Rights a lesser part of the Constitution, Tolstoy seems to be expanding the philosophy behind the narrative of the previous books and chapters. I could not do him or his work justice with a description of, nor do I recommend any person attempt to glean the full import of the philosophical essays without the aid of the overarching narrative. Likewise, I fall short of even a coherent synopsis of his essays.

Therefore I am left to simply quote the the following passage which stands alone well enough in sagacity and clarity, but hopefully will impel the curious to a full consumption of this classic work. (I nearly said "full digestion," but chose rather consumption, being the first step in the essential process of nourishment, since I acknowledge humbly that to digest this material would require me to eat Borscht, grow a large beard, and read through it many more times.)

"Only in our self-confident day of the popularization of knowledge- thanks to that most powerful engine of ignorance, the diffusion of printed matter- has the question of the freedom of will been put on a level on which the question itself cannot exist. In our time the majority of so-called advanced people- that is, the crowd of ignoramuses- have taken the work of the naturalists who deal with one side of the question for a solution of the whole problem.

They say and write and print that the soul and freedom do not exist, for the life of man is expressed by muscular movements and muscular movements are conditioned by the activity of the nerves; the soul and free will do not exist because at an unknown period of time we sprang from the apes. They say this, not at all suspecting that thousands of years ago that same law of necessity which with such ardor they are now trying to prove by physiology and comparative zoology was not merely acknowledged by all the religions and all the thinkers, but has never been denied. They do not see that the role of the natural sciences in this matter is merely to serve as an instrument for the illumination of one side of it. For the fact that, from the point of view of observation, reason and the will are merely secretions of the brain, and that man following the general law may have developed from lower animals at some unknown period of time, only explains from a fresh side the truth admitted thousands of years ago by all the religious and philosophic theories- that from the point of view of reason man is subject to the law of necessity; but it does not advance by a hair's breadth the solution of the question, which has another, opposite, side, based on the consciousness of freedom.

If men descended from the apes at an unknown period of time, that is as comprehensible as that they were made from a handful of earth at a certain period of time (in the first case the unknown quantity is the time, in the second case it is the origin); and the question of how man's consciousness of freedom is to be reconciled with the law of necessity to which he is subject cannot be solved by comparative physiology and zoology, for in a frog, a rabbit, or an ape, we can observe only the muscular nervous activity, but in man we observe consciousness as well as the muscular and nervous activity.

The naturalists and their followers, thinking they can solve this question, are like plasterers set to plaster one side of the walls of a church who, availing themselves of the absence of the chief superintendent of the work, should in an access of zeal plaster over the windows, icons, woodwork, and still unbuttressed walls, and should be delighted that from their point of view as plasterers, everything is now so smooth and regular."


A final thought:

The first paragraph stated, "Only in our self-confident day of the popularization of knowledge- thanks to that most powerful engine of ignorance, the diffusion of printed matter- has the question of the freedom of will been put on a level on which the question itself cannot exist."

If thus was the opinion stemming from the the keen intellect of a man living over 100 years ago in eastern Europe seeing the influence of the 400 year old printing press, what shock would that same mind have faced in today's culture at the "popularization of knowledge" vomited out in the name of "reality", "news", and "information" through 42" LCD screens and 15.5" monitors?

Abandoning the Battle

1 Peter 5:8-9
(... resist him steadfast in the faith...)

For reasons yet enigmatic to historians, Moscow in 1812 was surrendered to the invading French as its inhabitants fled north east to St. Petersburg and all other points north. Then, in a fateful lumbering lurch Napoleon's hoard collapsed wearily onto the vacated couches of Moscow. Like a workman weary from a day's energies the grenadiers fell into a languid pose only a few short months shy of a bitter Russian winter. This repose was their demise.

Tolstoy painstakingly describes the ruin of this adamant force through both essay and narrative in the second half of his timeless work; War and Peace. The following is from one of those essays:

"Though tattered, hungry, worn out, and reduced to a third of their original number, the French entered Moscow in good marching order. It was a weary and famished, but still a fighting and menacing army. But it remained an army only until its soldiers had dispersed into their different lodgings. As soon as the men of the various regiments began to disperse among the wealthy and deserted houses, the army was lost forever and there came into being something nondescript, neither citizens nor soldiers but what are known as marauders. When five weeks later these same men left Moscow, they no longer formed an army. They were a mob of marauders, each carrying a quantity of articles which seemed to him valuable or useful. The aim of each man when he left Moscow was no longer, as it had been, to conquer, but merely to keep what he had acquired. Like a monkey which puts its paw into the narrow neck of a jug, and having seized a handful of nuts will not open its fist for fear of losing what it holds, and therefore perishes, the French when they left Moscow had inevitably to perish because they carried their loot with them, yet to abandon what they had stolen was as impossible for them as it is for the monkey to open its paw and let go of its nuts. Ten minutes after each regiment had entered a Moscow district, not a soldier or officer was left. Men in military uniforms and Hessian boots could be seen through the windows, laughing and walking through the rooms. In cellars and storerooms similar men were busy among the provisions, and in the yards unlocking or breaking open coach house and stable doors, lighting fires in kitchens and kneading and baking bread with rolled-up sleeves, and cooking; or frightening, amusing, or caressing women and children. There were many such men both in the shops and houses- but there was no army."

And thus continues the trend ultimately decimating the French forces, not as a result of battle, but poignantly in the very absence of a confrontation with the enemy. When the disciplined companies abandoned their purpose, they fell predictably into an individualistic mob demonstrating the true nature of humanism and moral decay. They were never again assembled into any resemblance of their former glory.

As a follower of Jesus Christ we face the same peril. How many times have I grieved for the spiritual ruin of a friend who, once evidently contending for the faith, has in times of ease and repose settled too deeply into perceived peacetime comforts? How many times have I moved from Christian soldier to marauder? Though at moments the cannon fire dies down and the enemy recoils, we are fools to forget that the battle exists around us. That is our reality, and our relationship to this created space and time. We exist within a battle. If at any time we acquiesce to the weakness of our flesh and expose an apathetic - or worse, arrogant - flank to our enemy, then an advance against our moral battle lines should not be unexpected.

A Present Help


I turned on the radio while driving through Concord this morning to be greeted by an apathetic female voice listing off the news stories of the day. "The four Americans being held by Somali pirates were killed earlier this morning..." was all I heard. I quickly turned off the radio and stared blankly through the windshield at crystal clear skies not unlike those in the internet thumbnail photo behind the smiling faces of Jean and Scott Adam adrift on the S/V Quest.

Only yesterday I had been reading the developing story of their plight, the U.S. warships monitoring the situation, and the compelling fact that they were known to be Christians carrying Bibles to distribute in oppressive lands. One story even went so far as to state the relative insignificance of the Bibles and their faith to the situation since, "...the pirates...are not hardline Islamists." We may never know whether the Bibles played a role in their unlikely demise or not.

But the Bibles made a difference to me. I had breathed a prayer for them upon hearing the first accounts, and then breathed another more plaintive prayer upon learning of the repulsive resolution. Repulsive to me.

Was this course of events repulsive to the Master of the seas as well? The foul filth of a fallen planet must always be repulsive to the Creator. Yet I'm certain he was was not repulsed by the chain of events, and much to the contrary, was very near and faithfully present there.

My girls were both on the verge of illness Sunday morning, and I'm recovering from a knee injury, so I held church with my 7 year old in the living room while Bec went on to church. We read Psalm 46.

1 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

I took time to work the various angles of "present," "fear," "refuge," and "strength" in order to coax these pertinent truths through a 2nd grade mind.

I couldn't help thinking of these verses as I pondered that fateful final voyage for the Adams. Their "earth was removed" and their "waters roared," and some would say that God was not "a very present help" in their trouble. Humanity is chronically short sighted.

This wealthy couple from beautiful Santa Monica, California, aboard a beautiful Yacht must have left a fortune behind. What wonderful people and what tragic loss. Such wealth abandoned.

But the wealth, the wonder, and the yacht were not lost to pirates. It seems they were not even the property of the Adams. Rather, as should be the case in the lives of all Christians, the material forfeiture and submission of life must have occurred long before the pirates were first spotted on the horizon. It seems the Adams had already passed the possession of these on to Another. Their possessions and their mission were in the hands of their Present Help.

When God is our strength, our refuge, and always present, and when we have submitted the charts and direction of our life to the Master, it should be a small step indeed through the gates of heaven.

I firmly believe the Creator was present on that yacht, and with Him the peace that passes understanding.

Tolstoy on Politicians


Count Feodor Rostopchin - governor of Moscow and historical fool, found himself alone in a world not unlike that in which many politicians find themselves - created for and by themselves. Leo Tolstoy describes the conflicted position Rostopchin has established and was thus abandoned into, as the Russian capitol is emptied in anticipation of Napoleon's anticlimactic entrance. The Count is utterly disconnected from those whom he should be leading. To this, Tolstoy provides the following insight:

"In quiet and untroubled times it seems to every administrator that it is only by his efforts that the whole population under his rule is kept going, and in this consciousness of being indispensable every administrator finds the chief reward of his labor and efforts. While the sea of history remains calm the ruler-administrator in his frail bark, holding on with a boat hook to the ship of the people and himself moving, naturally imagines that his efforts move the ship he is holding on to. But as soon as a storm arises and the sea begins to heave and the ship to move, such a delusion is no longer possible. The ship moves independently with its own enormous motion, the boat hook no longer reaches the moving vessel, and suddenly the administrator, instead of appearing a ruler and a source of power, becomes an insignificant, useless, feeble man."

Another First

Yes, I'm starting another blog. I feel it's time to start writing on a different level than much of what is written in Cycling Through. There is so much that should be said and so much said that shouldn't be, that I start a second blog with hesitancy. I don't know which side the content I hope to post will fall on. I truly hope that what is found here will be worth my time to write and worth your time to read.

What is the content I hope to lay out?

To answer that, I'll answer the unasked question regarding the meaning behind the name of the blog. "Lamp Lit"

To begin, I think I've managed to create a blog title with a couple of meaningful interpretations.

1. "Your word is lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." says the Psalmist. I predict that my thoughts in regard to God's word and works, and the effect they have on my life will be expanded here. I hope that my way will continue to be lit by the lamp of God's word.

2. When you want to sit down for a few moments beneath a good book, where is it that you hope to land with book in hand? How about a soft leather sofa in a den with fireplace and wood paneling? Sounds inviting to me. Of course no sane interior designer would put track lighting or an ostentatious overhead light in such a space. Rather, at the end of the sofa stands a mission style table on which rests a picture of my lovely wife and a carved table lamp with a modest taupe cloth shade. The firelight and a singular 60 watt bulb are the lone sources of light, when, on a blustery evening I retire with Leo Tolstoy to hear more of Napoleon and Czar Alexander. To best appreciate romantic literature, a romantic atmosphere is a must. (This I say in supposition, since I currently have only the sofa noted in the above description.) For a romantic atmosphere, lamp lighting is also a must.
This long explanation leads then to this: I anticipate also, that other literary works will inspire much content found here. Thus, the play on the word "literature" in the title - Lamp Lit.

And so in describing the origin of my title, I have likewise described the anticipated content of this blog. I hope that we (you who choose to navigate here, and I) will find mutual enjoyment in those thoughts arising from what others have have kindly composed before.
